Digital-Transformation and sustainability: a natural tag team.

It all started with Digitization: when the first Electronic Mail was sent nearly 60 years ago at MIT, a silent revolution enfolded: Digitization meant the transition from analog data (often represented in wave-based technology) to a very simple concept: on or off, zero or one, abstracted in a binary layer.
But Digitization was just about the data. With Digitalization it was about the processes, so how the data is flowing through organizations.
Now Digital Transformation is about the purpose of the organization itself. It‘s about people, customers, employees, added value – and their interactions. It’s strategy first, technology second.

As a MIT Research study shows, digital transformed companies are about 26% more profitable then the norm. A PWC research says, that 80% of CEOs think, that „the production technology their companies use, will change in the next five years“. That’s why its common sense nowadays, that digital transformation is at the heart of every organization that wants to succeed in the future.

The electric light did not come from the continuous improvement of candles.

When an IT powered Digitalization is at the very heart of an organization, a Sustainable Transformation Strategy also has to be driven by IT, has to understand Digital Transformation. This means, not only IT itself has to sustainable (often labelled GreenIT), but sustainability has to be driven by digital technologies.

As in the process of Digital Transformation, most organizations are still on the first steps of the road to a Sustainable Transformation Strategy. GRI powered reports are mostly a mere greenwashing PR tool than a real change strategy. IT is being used to fuel these reports – but its transformational power has not been unleashed yet. When it comes to implementation of sustainability strategies into organizations, Digital-Transformation and Sustainability are natural allies, which can enfold superpowers.

GDPR related fines have risen significantly. And thats good.

In a panel discussion this week, I was arguing with the great Tom Moran wether GDPR in Europe was being properly pursued by regulators. My thesis was, that officials will offer an unofficial 5 year transition period (that would be until 2023) until when fines will really be enforced. Now ft reports, fines have risen 40% in the last year, which underpins my thesis.

And this is a good thing. Why?

Not going too much into detail, but I’m a fan of GDPR (and no, not of the stupid cookie-banner-hell). In short, GDPR consists of a whole stack of

  1. Organizational-
  2. Technical- and
  3. Accountability regulations.

Especially (3) is important, as it shifts accountability from consumers to companies. Done right, GDPR can bring huge competitive advantage to companies and organizations, as trust an transparency is on the rise in consumer demand. The higher the trust, the

  1. longer the customer stays with your company,
  2. the customer adds data / assets to our company

leading to a higher customer live time value. And that is sustainable.

So why is enforcing GDPR law a good thing and the rise in fines a good signal? When there’s a new law in town, enforcing can be a hard thing. Law-suits will become daily business. That the fines are rising now says, that officials become more sure, to be on the winning side. And therefore we, the customer, too.

Brave now supports IPFS

Brave, a security focused Webbrowser, now as first browser supports the IPfS protocol, meaning that it can display webpages on a peer-to-peer network. The Internet‘s basic http Protocol normally relies on central servers which serve the content to your browser: eg. this Website runs on a Webserver hosted by mighty networks. Peer-to-Peer protocols (remember BitTorrent) work as a distributed system much like Bitcoin does and thus are more reliable and resilient than central servers. Peer-to-peer Technology is also based on the idea of shared resources, being much more performant and thus sustainable than single user systems. IPFS also points in the area of Accessibility: distributed systems can’t be restricted by central firewalls and so serve information free float and speech especially in areas with governmental restricted internet access.

German automakers, BMW and Tensorflow

Recently german automakers are having hard times: innnovation is stalling, electrification is not consequent enough – all in all: they will lose the race for future mobility, they say. But will they?

I’ve seen BMW from the inside from 2010 to 2015 when I was working on different digitalization projects for MINI and BMW (the still online webconfigurator was one of it). And even back then BMW was astonishing far ahead of many other big companies I knew, eg. in agility adoption. I think, there’s a difference in the „nerdy and cool“ Tesla attitude and the german engeneering art. Don’t underestimate the latter. I just stumbled upon a GUI for Element in picture recognition based on Tensorflow, written by BMW, released on Github.

I know, they are nailing it. And if they realese it – it just works. BMW thinks in quality above time. Their strategy to OpenSource AI components is part of their innovation program. Maybe they want to acquire new talent by this – maybe they just show a glimpse of the massive AI powered production line they have 😉

Buffer Data Privacy

Looking for an easy „share link to twitter“ Safari-Extension I came along old friend buffer. Installing the Safari extension its aks me to:

  • let them read private data like credit-card information, passwords etc.
  • see all Websites I visited.

As from a technical perspectrive I somehow can understand it – but nowadays I think more intelligent solutions need to be in place:

  • take information „only when I acknowlede you need them“ aka: don’t you permamently listen on me!

Solution: using the official twitter app, and then use the „Share button“.

Office 365 Business Premium Mac Aktivierungsproblem

Habe mein Microsoft 365 Office Business premium Mac Abo erneuert und dann folgende Fehlermeldung erhalten:

Der Abonnementdatensatz für diesen Computer kann nicht gefunden werden. Aktiveren Sie das Produkt erneut. Fehlercode: 0xD0000004

Hat alles nicht geklappt, mega Nerven gekostet – und nach einer Stunde Hotline, hat mir tasächlich ein MS Techniker helfen können. Es gibt hier ein Tool, dass die alten Abos restlos entfernt. Danach einfach nur neu aktiveren und es sollte wieder gehen.

Externes Facebook Sharing

Scheint mir so zu sein, dass Facebook seit geraumer Zeit (seit August 2018?!) kein externes Sharing mehr zulässt, wenn man nicht seinen privaten Account in eine „Facebook-Seite“ überführt hat.

Wirklich verstehen tue ich es nicht – vor Allem sehe ich nicht ein, alle „Freunde“ dann zu der Seite einzuladen:

Vielleicht ist das auch der Grund, warum ich keine vernünftigen Inhalte meiner Freunde auf FB sehe. Ein weiterer Sargnagel im Social Network.

DuckDuckGo vs. Google

Auch wenn es das „Googlen“ ja längst in den Deutschen Duden geschafft hat, muss einem das ganze Thema Tracking ja nicht volkommen egal sein.

Aus dem Grund habe ich vor 2 Wochen die Suchmaschinen auf Safari (Mac + iPhone) auf DDG umgestellt. Mir ist das Modell der klar positionierten „Anzeigen“, aber nicht Trackens, das DDG umsetzt, eigentlich sehr sympathisch.

Nur habe ich festgestellt, dass ich jede 2. Suche dann doch wieder auf Google durchführe – einfach weil die Ergebnisse für mich relevanter waren.

Insbesondere im Bereich IT/Technik (wo ich es eigentlich am allerwenigsten erwartet hätte), waren Goolges Suchergebnisse einfach besser und relevanter: Bildschirmfoto 2019-02-11 um 13.56.27.png

Die Google Resultate scheinen einfach einen Tick besser zu verstehen, was ich wirklich „möchte“. Im Sinne von: was ist das Ziel Deiner Suche. 

Was ich an der DDG Suche allerdings sehr gut fine, und das fehlt mir bei Google, ist die zeitliche Eingrenzung der Themen:

Die Aktulität ist für mich oft ein wichtiges Kriterium in den Resulaten, daher finde ich die Eingrenzung die man hier vornehmen kann, praktisch.

Ich gebe DDG noch eine weitere Woche ein Chance – sonst muss Google halt wieder ran.

TP-Link Geräte, Raspberry und Homebridge: „Siri mach‘ das Licht an.“

Zu Hause habe ich ein paar Birnen von TP-Link verbaut. Was ich daran ganz chic fand, war zum einen der recht günstige Preis (ca. 34 EUR) (im Vergleich z.B. zu Phillips Hue 149 EUR als StarterKit) und zum anderen, dass man keine spezielle Bridge oder so brauchte. TP-Link Glühbirnen hängt man einfach ins WLAN und „gut is“. Alexa ist dann so schlau und findet die trotzdem (es gibt für Alexa eine Kasa Skill – Kasa ist die App, um TP-Link Geräte zu steuern).

Für Siri gab es bisher keinen „Skill“, den man aktivieren könnte. Aber ich habe ja meinen Raspberry daheim laufen 🙂

Und es gibt ein nettes OpenSource Project namens „Homebridge“. Homebridge ist ein kleiner node.js Server, den man mit entsprechenden npm plugins „füttern“ kann. Diese Plugins entsprechen in etwa den skills bei Alexa und es gibt sie für alle erdenklichen Geräte.

Und so gehts:

  1. Wie in diesem Guide beschrieben, ersteinmal homebridge auf dem Device (hier Raspberry) installieren
  2. Dann das npm paket „homebridge-tplink-smarthome“ installieren mittels „npm install -g homebridge-tplink-smarthome“
  3. Unter /home/user/.homebridge/config.js eine entsprechende Konfigurationsdatei anlegen. Ein Besipiel findet man z.B. hier (gerne auch den PIN ändern 🙂 )
  4. Unter Platforms reicht folgender Eintrag (damit sind fast alle TP Link Produkte abgedeckt):

  6. Homebridge als Service einrichten und beim Booten starten lassen, Guide hier

  7. Mittels journalctl -au homebridge noch mal den QR-Code zum Sync mit Homekit anzeigen lassen

  8. Mittels HomeKit App auf dem iPhone ein „neues Gerät hinzufügen“ und den QR code vom Termin scannen
  9. Homebridge erkennt die Geräte und stelt sie der Homekit Anwendung zur Verfügung. So geht also TP-Link auch mit Siri 🙂

Scanbot und my-vpa für automatische, komplexe Arbeitsabläufe. Heute: Quittungen

Manch einer sagt ja „Quittungen sammeln und sortieren: Toll, das mach‘ ich an einem Regentag“. Mir ist das schon seit je her lästig, umso mehr freut es mich, dass wir über das Sharing Feature unserer neuen my-vpa App für iOS und Android  jetzt Dokumente von einer anderen App direkt in die my-vpa App sharen können. Und das funktioniert so:

1. Ich habe eine Aufgabe bei my-vpa für meinen Assistenten erstellt, die in etwa lautet „Alle Quittungen kommen als PDF, bitte daraus eine summierte Abrechnung für den Vormonat erstellen und an unsere Rechnungsabteilung per Mail, mich in cc, senden.“

2. Ich nutze Scanbot für iOS und scanne einmal im Monat für den Vormonat alle Quittungen.

3. Ich klicke auf „Sharen als PDF“ und lade damit automatisch das PDF in die richtige Aufgabe bei my-vpa hoch

4. Mein VPA erstellt mir die Abrechnung und sendet diese an die Rechnungsabteilung unserer Firma

Das tolle ist, dass das systemweit funktioniert, ich also aus allen anderen Apps, wo sich etwas „sharen“ lässt, die Dokumente direkt zu den passenden Aufgaben in der my-vpa App hochladen kann. Das können Bilder, Sprachnotizen, Videos oder Dokumente wie Rechnungen, Korrekturen, Bestellungen, Benachrichtigungen, Anrufbeantworter-Sprachnachrichten etc. sein. Als nächstes baue ich mir einen Workflow, von wo aus bestimmte Dokumente direkt an den Steuerberater gesendet werden 🙂
