Well, I recently started an intensive chinese language course (100H) and I´m going to post all our meetings in my brand new chinese blog (sorry it´s in german, ´cause I haven´t got the time to translate to english either).

Tsunami help – a political desaster?
My cousin is an aid-man in the german „Bundeswehr“ – his job is now to serve on the aid-ship „Berlin“ of the Bundeswehr which is on it´s way to Sumatra. But hey, what does the Indonesien government say? We don´t need you here. As my cousin told me via Email, they are doing nothing there than trying out their brand new aid-ship – which is one of the newest in the world. I´m asking myself, why is the Bundeswehr there? Didn´t´they know the Indonesien government doesn´t want them to be there? Couldn´t they ask before they send the soldiers there? What they are doing at the moment (they are NOT ALLOWED to go on land an help) is shipping down the cost, and when they see injured people they take a small boat and go to the beach, trying to help. But that can´t be the meaning of such an operation. The germans are there 2 weeks too late, and why they are there is just of political purposes – they´s rather ship to india an trying to help there when they could (or safe taxes).
Power of Blogs
So here we are: maybe you all have heard of the german ringtone company "jamba" and it´s dubios business modell: mostly kids are buying a monthly abo of ringtones which costs about 4,99€. The problem is, that this information (monthly abo) ist nearly not readable on the TV-Screens where "jamba" sets most of it´s advertising. About a month ago this german blog wrote about this dubios business modell, and the whole german blogosphere was linking and discussing about it. And finally today, this story is on spiegel.de which is one of germany´s biggest news-company and one of the biggest news-site. It looks as if the blogosphere in germany is really growing, and that PR-disasters like this of "jamba" do really matter even in "offline life".

Google images lags again
When you are searching on "google images" for "tsunami" you´ll find nothing more than pictures of recent tsunamis, illustrations, warning signs, etc. Why aren´there actual photos of the katastrophy, or better: all the missed people? Is it because of the long time google needs to re-index the web? I Think google could really help by indexing all these different "missing-lists" which exits in the web out there.
UPDATE: So, google.COM brings different results than google.DE : on *.COM youßll find Tsunami/Asia relevant links to google news.
Virus attack: menshealth.de down
Wow, I´ve never expected such a big site like menshealth.de to be down because of a virus. Krass!
Thank you 37signals.com
Thank you for getting an outside in view on the internet: the guys from 37signals.com (which are running basecamphq.com too, a genius projectserver which I´m running for almost a year now in our company) will launch their next project soon: 43things.com is "goal orientated " website, which means it is a mixture from social networking in a blog style, auction, life help, etc. The example is "getting a powerbook" (that´s the goal) and now users can interact, giving help to the others, report maybe good- or bad buying experiences, etc. I see a big potential in this, because people want to DO something. They want to reach a goal, to buy a present, to find the way. No combine everything you know fro the internet by now and combine it! That´s what 43things.com seems to do. (thanks Steve for the hint to 43things 😉 )
Kids should learn these
yes, I totally agree with Adriaan´s list. Kids today need to know more than chemistry formulas etc. Any additional suggestions?
1. ten-finger typing without staring at the keyboard, that’s indeed one to know
2. speaking in front of a group and deal with questions appropriately
3. expressing thoughts on paper in a concise and clear way so that your kid sibling understands it
4. using a computer and the internet, with as bonus basic programming
5. understanding and speaking English, Spanish and at least basic Chinese or Japanese
6. understanding why reading matters and doing it
7. chess, checkers, or go
8. a nice curling shot, a cross-over dribble, or a decent fastball (soccer, basketball, or baseball, for the ignorant)
9. painting, writing, acting, performing, playing music, or doing photography
10. the “or” in (8) and (9) is an inclusive or, so, yes, formal logic is also a must-know
11. the concept of “sharing”
12. understanding that there are other cultures, other religions, other people and to respect them
13. (11) and (12) actually apply to adults more than to kids, so I’ll add: preserve the innocence of youth
14. basic etiquette
15. cooking AND washing up
16. sewing
17. cycling and fixing bikes
18. honesty
19. being able to play 5 different computer games (preferably 3D) to shape problem solving and spacial navigation
20. reading a map
21. milking a cow
22. growing a plant
23. keeping a pet
24. building a bookcase or desk
25. safe sex
26. how to administer first aid, including mouth-on-mouth and CPR
